Instructor Fatally Shot and 25 Girls Abducted in Armed Clash at School in Nigeria
Weapon-carrying attackers have taken the life of an instructor and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an attack on a girls' secondary school in Nigeria's northwestern region, police reports indicate.
The armed faction invaded the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on Monday, authorities reported.
The attackers "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a gun duel" before scaling the perimeter fence and abducting the learners from their dormitory, authorities disclosed.
An educational worker was fatally shot while defending the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now receiving treatment.
Observers recounted a large group of attackers, referred to locally as criminal elements, who came shooting randomly to generate terror.
Community members told reporters that the armed men then led a group of female students into adjacent wilderness.
The police said they had deployed "supplementary tactical squads, alongside military personnel and vigilante groups" to the area.
A systematic finding and recovery effort is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and suspected escape routes.
In the past few years, schools in northern Nigeria have become frequent targets for armed groups, who routinely perform seizures to demand financial compensation or leverage deals with the government.
