The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Each time a major awards ceremony nears, one notices a clamor for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.

Another commentator has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: We need an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely that year
  • A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent small games, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games in the world and have been for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
