While Beachgoers Escaped Attack, Viral Picture Depicts Rescuer Running ‘Pedal to the Metal’ To the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent resident of Bondi, views the iconic beach as her back yard. On a recent weekend evening, she, similar to other local residents, detected loud noises echoing across the suburb.

“That was the initial assumption, but I thought it was daylight and there was nothing visible,” Ching states. Exiting her apartment, she saw people “flooding up Bondi Road”. Their expressions she saw signaled trouble had occurred.

As she stood on the street, conversing with a pair who had run up the incline in their swimwear, she noticed someone moving up behind her. It was a rescuer, running at full speed towards Bondi barefoot from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while holding a defibrillator.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I only caught a glimpse of this blur of blue,” Ching describes. “He was simply racing by. It was just him moving in the opposite way that the crowd was trying to get away from, while holding that large equipment and unshod … He was sprinting at something that surely every instinct would signal you to run in the other direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just fully maximum effort running.”

An Iconic Image of Courage Amidst Crisis

The photograph taken by Ching of the lifeguard, now known to be Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as a prime example of acts of courage in the following of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, says that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to assist the other members at Bondi, as well as to work with emergency personnel, police and ambulance crews caring for dozens of those hurt.

Collective Outpouring and Assistance

Doolan’s account was just one of many to come out of the neighbourhood, with the beach facility adjacent to the site of the violence serving as a temporary treatment center. Reports indicate that fellow lifeguards were also seen helping out, including rushing into the surf to save people in distress.

In the days after the events, comments of support flooded in. One post conveyed thanks for the responders who showed that “compassion will always overcome evil”.

The team of lifeguards published a statement, explaining they were “coming to terms with what happened”.

“Thank you all for your thoughtful messages and support. We are overwhelmed by the care shown towards our personnel,” the team wrote. “Eventually, we will recount our experiences in the belief that it helps those involved.”

Local Government Recognition

Waverley council, the governing body that hires many professional beach safety officers, remarked that the crew acted heroically from the instant the violence began until late that nighttime.

“People have shared so many powerful narratives, but the popular photo of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help save lives is remarkable,” stated a mayor.

“The team demonstrate selflessness every day in maintaining the safety of our iconic shores safe for surfers and swimmers, but what we observed on Sunday should be commended.

“As we grieve and come to terms with the terror of this brutal and barbaric terrorist attack, I think it is crucial that we focus on just how much light we have witnessed in the midst of such evil.”
